“TOEIC EXPRESS”? Your Ticket to Move Up”
/ By: Ruth C. Inocentes/
When was the last time you had your English skills checked? Were you pleased by the result? If not, what was the most difficult part of knowing the opposite of what you expect of your English test result?
For most people, accepting failure is the toughest thing to deal with, especially knowing that they have given themselves to their studies, but still suffered a lot of setbacks. Despite studying day in and day out, reading a variety of English books, or memorizing thousands of words ? moving up seemed so unrealizable. It was like a feeling of being cornered in the most terrible place on earth. If you are one of those people, don’t just sit and wait for another failure. Nothing is going to happen if you don’t take the initiative and don’t do anything that could change your situation.
I teach Part 7 (Reading Comprehension) of TOEIC. Since I started, I’ve had a lot of students who made me so proud of being one of their instructors. Most of them, if not all, were able to achieve their goals as far as the improvability of their reading and vocabulary skills is concerned ? just like the ones I’ve had lately. First is Jerry, a Taiwanese student, who increased his score from 595 (diagnostic test) to 680 in just 2 weeks. Kathy, who is Taiwanese as well, got 770 in just a matter of 3 weeks ? that’s 175 points higher than her diagnostic test. Another Taiwanese named Joshua has gained 820 after 6 weeks of taking a series of mock tests. But the one that really touched me the most is Mily, who is a Japanese student. She cried when she got 800 the day before her graduation. It may sound a little dramatic but her tears meant a lot to us, her teachers. All her effort really paid off.
