Scoring High on TOEIC: Essential Tactics for Achieving Your Target Score

By: Teacher Regine

The Test of English for International Communication, often referred to as TOEIC, is a highly regarded English language test that is recognized all over the world. It is designed specifically to assess a person’s everyday English-language skills used in an international environment, such as workplaces and universities. The TOEIC consists of two different tests: one for receptive English skills (reading and listening) and one for productive English skills (speaking and writing). Students can take both TOEIC tests or just one of them, depending on what is needed. Each of the two tests has its own structure and scoring system. The Listening and Reading Test is a two-hour multiple-choice test consisting of two separately timed sections. On the other hand, the Speaking & Writing test lasts around 1 hour and 20 minutes and is designed to measure productive skills.

Now that you know everything there is to know about TOEIC, the only question that remains is: How do I  get the score I need? As a matter of fact, scoring high on the TOEIC requires a strategic approach and  diligent preparation. Here’s a comprehensive guide outlining essential tactics to help you achieve your target score:

Understand the Test Format: Learn about the TOEIC test format, including the number of sections, types of questions, and time restrictions for each section. This understanding will allow you to efficiently manage your time during the exam.

Work on Time Management: During your practice sessions, simulate exam conditions by timing yourself strictly. Learn to pace yourself so you can complete each section within the allotted time.  This is crucial for achieving a high score.

Practice Regularly: Consistent practice is essential for enhancing your skills. Use official TOEIC preparation materials and practice tests to familiarize yourself with the types of questions you will encounter. This will also help you discover your own strengths and weaknesses. Familiarize yourself with the time constraints of the test by timing your practice sessions.

Develop Confidence for TOEIC: Confidence plays a significant role in achieving a good TOEIC score.  A confident test-taker is less likely to be hampered by test anxiety, more likely to trust their instincts when answering questions, and often able to perform better under pressure.

Taking the TOEIC may be overwhelming, but with confidence and motivation, it is a challenge you can overcome. Keep in mind that your path to TOEIC mastery is about more than just the destination; it is also about the personal and professional development you will gain along the way. TOEIC is more than simply an exam; it is a key that unlocks opportunities and personal progress in the global marketplace.
