JUNIOR’S DAILY ROUTINE (Updated February 2024)

This is a JUNIOR ESL and PRIMARY ENGLISH student’s daily routine while studying abroad with family.

START OF THE DAY

Junior students usually wake up between 7:00 and 7:20 in the morning, eat breakfast, and start their day.

The first period starts at 08:00 and the second period starts at 08:50. The first hour can be adjusted to suit the junior’s lifestyle. Please note that breakfast lasts for 1 hour from 07:30 to 08:30.

REGULAR CLASS

One-on-one class: 4 hours are allocated, focusing on the SPEAKING AREA. Depending on the level, subjects such as discussion, pronunciation, public speaking, reading & vocabulary, etc., are also assigned. If the junior’s study abroad period is more than 4 weeks, a writing course is added. Of course, the curriculum is adjustable.
Small group classes: Mainly, 4 to 7 curricula are provided, including Listening, Grammar for Speaking, and General Conversation. The class size is 4 to 6 people. The Evening program runs for 2 hours after school, and attendance is optional. However, due to the enjoyable and personalized nature of this class tailored to students’ preferences, there is a high response from juniors.

Junior IELTS, Junior TOEFL, and Junior Cambridge courses are exam preparation programs with content strictly tailored to achieve high scores.

SPECIAL VOCABULARY CLASS

This class is designed to increase juniors’ vocabulary acquisition. Divided into a total of 3-4 classes depending on level and age, students are encouraged to learn 10-30 words a day.

SPECIAL VOCABULARY CLASS is an additional class we offer to all JUNIOR ESL and PRIMARY ENGLISH students. Participation is optional, not mandatory.

EVENING PROGRAM

This program is NOT COMPULSORY; only those who wish to participate can participate. It is held for 2 hours after school, and students (1) help with homework, (2) support self-study, and (3) enjoy English through play. The purpose of this time is to somehow help students enjoy English.

For the evening program, one teacher is assigned to every 10 students, and if the student is over 14 years old, the number of students in the classroom is set to 5 or less.

CLASS CHANGES AND OTHERS

The school’s class schedule can be changed at any time for two weeks after admission. Also, if you have any inconveniences in your life, you can tell us at any time. If it is off-hours, you can notify the manager through LINE GROUP.

Adjustments and changes to Junior’s classes reflect the opinions of parents. We are happy to provide parental consultation at any time!

WHAT PHILINTER ACADEMY CONSIDERS WHEN CONDUCTING CLASSES

1. During the first week of school, parents should check whether the student is adjusting well in the following three areas.

           Compatibility with teachers
Appropriate arrangement of class time (is the vacant time arranged well so  that students do not get tired?)
           Is the textbook level appropriate?

2. Since our curriculum focuses on speaking areas, certain parts of the textbook may be skipped if necessary. We would like to inform you in advance that, especially in one-on-one classes, the listening-related part may be skipped.

3. There is no difference in curriculum and teacher quality between the two courses: JUNIOR ESL (12-15 years) and PRIMARY ENGLISH (7- 11 years). The only difference is that the course names are different to differentiate between their ages. Group classes must consider both English level and age. In conclusion, there is no need for PRIMARY ENGLISH students to switch to JUNIOR ESL to improve the quality of their classes.

4. Some juniors are particularly sensitive to age; for example, a 14-year-old beginner may prefer not to be assigned to the same classroom as an 11-year-old beginner. Therefore, we organize classes considering not only the student’s age but also their personality.

5. Family study abroad is a series of processes in which the school and parents work together for the child’s education. Parents know their junior’s strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else, so we need their valuable input. Please give your feedback to the administrators at any time and often.

DAILY BUDDY REPORT

Parents will receive a BUDDY REPORT around 5 p.m. when classes end. This report is a ‘REMINDER’ of the class schedule and contains information about the class content and homework the student learned that day.
By receiving a buddy report, parents can also give their personal opinions to the buddy teacher regarding teaching methods/homework/tests, etc.

EXAM

Juniors must take the PROGRESS TEST on Friday of the fourth week of study. As the class progresses, you will participate in tests in between. Lasts approximately 3 hours.

Parental testing is optional. If you don’t want to, you can keep the class as is. Also, if a parent feels that their junior’s PROGRESS TEST is unnecessary, please notify the office 24 hours in advance.

WEEKLY TEST takes place every Wednesday. Starts at 17:00 and lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Each week, one of the following four topics will be covered in the test. The test areas are (1) USE OF VERB, (2) GRAMMAR FOR SPEAKING, (3) ESSENTIAL VOCABULARY, and (4) PATTERNS.

3 MEALS A DAY

Three meals are provided per day, even on weekends and public holidays.

Breakfast is simple and includes Western food, porridge, and fruit. Lunch and dinner are buffet style with 3 main dishes and 7 to 8 side dishes. During vacation periods, when there are many juniors, menus that children like are provided.

Hygiene and menu quality are well managed, and this has received good reviews from students and parents.

PERSONAL TIME AFTER SCHOOL

For parents, they take a break in the cafeteria, do laundry or clean, or go out to the nearby shopping mall. (Going out is allowed at any time)

Juniors usually finish their work day around 4 pm, and after that, they tend to do homework or go swimming.

AZON CONDO users are allowed to use a separate space in the school building as a rest area.

You can leave your belongings here or use it as a changing area for swimmers.

LAUNDRY AND CLEANING

Because parents’ classes usually end early, children tend to have more personal time than juniors. You can also request cleaning and laundry services, or other needs.

SWIMMING LESSON

Swimming lessons are held during students’ non-class time (vacant time) or after 4 pm after class. Surprisingly, many juniors take swimming lessons.

The swimming instructor’s tuition is approximately 250 to 350 pesos per hour. If two people learn together, the tuition fee is somewhat lower.

WATCHING MOVIES, ZUMBA

Movies start every Thursday at 18:30. We are selecting appropriate movies for juniors.

Zumba is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Time varies depending on circumstances.

WEEKEND ROUTINE

Most families visit supermarkets, hair shops, massage shops, and restaurants known for their delicious food. Also, many people go to SM or AYALA MALL located in the center of Cebu.

And some families can go to a resort with other families, or rent a car and go hopping or on a short trip.

Philinter conducts volunteer work at nursing homes and orphanages every other week as part of the OUTREACH PROGRAM. Some juniors participate in this.

HOW FAST CAN I IMPROVE MY SCORE IF I ENROLL IN THE TOEIC COURSE?

The rate at which you can improve your TOEIC score varies depending on your current level of English proficiency. Here’s an estimate of score improvement based on different starting levels:

  • If your English level is below 450 in TOEIC, you can anticipate an improvement of approximately 150-200 points per 4 weeks.
  • If your English level is below 600 in TOEIC, you can expect to improve your score by 100 to 150 points per 4 weeks.
  • For those with a score of 750 points and above, the rate of score improvement may be reduced.

On average, beginners or those with English proficiency below 450 can achieve a TOEIC score of 850 within approximately 12 weeks of dedicated study and practice.
